LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Laser hair removal is a treatment that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. during laser hair removal procedure, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.
Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, in some cases don’t result in permanent hair removal. In most cases multiple laser hair removal treatment sessions are needed for initial hair removal and further maintenance treatments might be needed as well.
Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair, although it is can be successfully used for all skin types. The difference is the number of needed sessions.

This will vary from person to person, but most people need between 6 -12 treatments for the best results.

  • Shave the area between 12-24 hours before your treatment and ensure the area is clean;

  • Do not wax or tweeze;

  • Avoid chemical peels or laser resurfacing up to 4 weeks prior to your treatment;

  • Exfoliate to remove any dead skin build up;

  • Avoid excessive sun/UV exposure on the area being treated up to 4 weeks prior to treatment – this includes sunbed or tan injections;

  • Avoid using topical creams/moisturisers and perfumes on the area being treated on the day of the appointment;

  • Keep us updated on any medical conditions throughout your treatment.

One of the benefits of Laser Hair Removal is that the treatment is virtually painless, however every person has different skin types and so our laser machine settings can be adjusted accordingly making sure you feel comfortable during the treatment.

Unfortunately, blonde, grey, white and some types of red hair do not respond satisfactorily to the treatment since these colours do not produce any pigment, therefore laser will not be able to reach its follicles and so it will miss them.

No, unfortunately Laser Hair Removal cannot be put over the top of tattoos.

WAXING

Types of waxing and how waxing works

Waxing works by removing the hair from its root. As long as it’s done professionally, most people can have a wax and enjoy the benefits.

There are two main types of wax: hot wax (both hot wax and strip wax) and cold wax; each of these then come in different scents and colours.

Hot wax, as its name suggests, is wax that is heated to between 40 and 50 degrees celsius, applied to the skin using a wooden spatula. The therapist waits for the wax to cool and harden before removing it directly, along with the hairs.

Another type of hot wax is a soft wax (also known as warm wax or strip wax) again, the hot wax is applied to the area being treated. The therapist then applies a disposable strip over the wax and then waits for it to cool. Once cool the therapist then removes the strip bringing the wax and hair with it.

At smooth skin studio we use an outstanding soft wax, made in brazil. This wax is vegan, effective on thicker and even on the strongest hairs, while very gentle to the skin.

Cold wax comes on strips which are already shaped for a particular body area (eg the upper lip) and applied to the area before being pulled off. It is typically used for home waxing and less efficient than hot wax as it often needs to be repeated multiple times.
The amount of time waxing lasts for is dependent on the body area and how quickly your hair grows. In average long leg waxing lasts up to six weeks and for bikini waxes it’s usually from three to four weeks.

Waxing does involve pulling the hair from the root so it is more painful than other hair removal options. However, the amount of discomfort it varies from person to person and most of our clients say that the discomfort they feel improves over time, it disappears quickly and is worth it for the smooth finish.

Another aspect is that the amount of discomfort is also down to the skill of the therapist. At smooth skin studio, we ensure that all of our techniques minimize discomfort and the more regularly you have an area waxed, the less uncomfortable it will be.

You can get a wax on your period. However, we recommend that you schedule it for more than a few days before your time of the month. This is because your skin is more sensitive during your period and therefore it can feel more uncomfortable. If you decide to wax during your period, we ask you to use tampon.

Not much preparation is needed; to improve the results exfoliate the area a few days before to loosen any ingrown hairs and have your skin clean of any cream or oils.
